President Jakaya Kikwete has said that the introduction of multiparty system in the country has brought hope, trust, expanded participation in the political arena and enhanced means of holding the government accountable.

In a statement availed to The Guardian on Sunday,  the president said that in order to improve the system and strengthen foundations of  democracy, the country must be governed by people who follow the rules and do not use excessive force.

The president made the remarks at a public lecture on the security of the nation held at the National Defence College (NDC) at Kunduchi, Dar es Salaam on Friday.

He was responding to questions from a Kenyan student who wanted to know how the system have affected unity of the nation as for more than 30 years Tanzania has been a country that has helped many African nations.

The president said the multiparty model is the best system as it provides hope and expands the scope of the political arena, which was not so in the past. Now, one can decide to join any political party he wants,” he stated.

“It is a system that can hold the government accountable. It is a good system for the widening of democracy, and now people can even decide to reduce the budget of the president’s travels,” he said, poking fun at parliamentary debates.

He said that the country needs different insights from different politicians. Such ideas cannot affect democracy and are useful to improve the ruling party, he further noted.
“My concern is that when we mix the use of excessive force the scope of the political arena will contract, and that will destroy the country,” he added.
