Musoma.Police in Musoma have arrested four
people including two Kenyan citizens after they were found in illegal
possession of a sub-machine gun and 23 rounds of ammunition.
Speaking to journalists here, the Mara regional
police commander, Mr Ferdinand Mtui, said the suspects were arrested
yesterday at Nyasho market area in Musoma Municipality.
Commander Mtui explained that at 10.30 am police
got information that there were people trying to smuggle a gun and
bullets in a box full of bananas and moved in to arrest them.
He said that authorities were holding the suspects
whose names he didn’t mention, explaining that doing so would
interfere with interrogation procedures.
Mr Mtui added that they were still interrogating
the suspects to identify the network behind the smuggling of weapons
inside and outside the region.
“Once we complete interrogation of the suspects
they would be brought before the court for legal procedures,” he said.
He asked wananchi to cooperate with the Police so as to fight the
weapons smugglers’ network.
He also noted that police in Mara Region have so
far managed to impound four guns and 461 bullets due to the operation
carried out from January to April this year.
Commander Mtui explained that the operation was
sustainable and that it aimed at identifying people who engaged in
different criminal incidents that have been taking place in the region
and neighbouring areas. He called on wananchi in the region who possess
weapons illegally to surrender them to the Police before they were
caught and charged for possessing them.
He noted that if wananchi cooperated with the
authorities crime would be ended in the region, a situation that would
enable residents in the region to carry on with their development
activities
