The
government has been advised to incorporate employment seeking skills in
the country’s teaching curriculum to better graduates’ ability to
compete in the employment arena both within and outside the country.
The observation was made in Dar es Salaam by Restless Development Assistant Program Coordinator (International Citizen Services) Angel Mwaipopo during a career fair seminar with students from various education institutions.
The seminar brought together more than 500 graduates from the Vocational Education and Training Authorities (VETA), Tanzania Institute of Accounts (TIA) and the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy to receive employment training skills.
According to the coordinator, the employability skills once incorporated in the curriculum would empower young people with self employability skills and build their confidence for global employment market.
Meanwhile, Catherine Nchimbi, Restless Development Team Leader pointed out that job markets are increasingly more competitive and require applicants to be determinant of what employers need.
“Tanzania has a lot of people with potentials and if effectively trained they can actively compete in the international employment market,” Nchimbi said.
Nchimbi was of the view that if employability skills were incorporated in teaching curriculums similar to communication skills the country can curb unemployment crisis.
A participant, Furahini Godlike, applauded the initiative noting that it had helped improve his capacity to make inspirational speeches and his job interview taking skills as well.
Restless development is a global volunteering program that seeks to remove global poverty through a joint team between youth in United Kingdom and Tanzania.
The coordinator identified that the restless development works with potential employers to link all the graduates to internship or direct employment.
Restless Development offered three month training on CV and cover letter writing, job application, interview taking skills, entrepreneurship, IT and communication skills.
