Ilala Municipal Council Mayor, Jerry Silaa
New
road signs are expected to mushroom in the Dar es Salaam Central
Business District (CBD) replacing the old worn out ones in the coming
months and motorists are urged to be keen of the development envisioned
to drastically reduce traffic jams and make the commute experience less
hazardous and maybe even enjoyable.Announcing the new
developments yesterday in Dar es Salaam, Ilala Municipal Council Mayor, Jerry Silaa, said the changes seek to comply with the DART System (Dar Rapid Transit System) that is expected to start at the end of this year to smoothen traffic flow in the city centre.
“There will be new traffic routes and signs in the City’s Central Business District which will reduce traffic jams,” he told journalists.
“People should be aware of these changes especially when driving to the City centre,” he said, noting that among other things the signs will limit road side parking easing traffic flow.
Silaa explained that apart from allowing smooth implementation of DART, the new signs are envisioned to have the capacity to de-congest traffic in Dar’s busy City Centre as well as ensuring improvement in efficiency of daladala operations.
“The move will also enforce the demarcation of part of Morogoro road limiting it only to Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and pedestrians,” he added.
Explaining more on the expected changes, a representative of Ilala Municipal Council at the BRT project, Eng. Tigahwa Serapion said all commuter buses using Kilwa road will now stop at a designated station and then turn back along the same route.
Those using Nyerere and Uhuru roads will stop at a designated station at Mnazi Mmoja and also use the same route on their way back.
There will be buses that start off at Mnazi Mmoja then go through the Bibi Titi and Maktaba road up to the Old Post Office and then they too will turn around there and use the same roads back to Mnazi Mmoja.
Serapion said that all commuter buses using Ali Hassan Mwinyi road towards the City centre will now stop at the YMCA on Upanga road and reroute back on the same route.
Only private cars will be allowed to use Sokoine drive from the Central Police Station to Kivukoni, Ocean Road hospital and connect with other roads including Ali Hassan Mwinyi road.
Further, apart from buses coming from Mnazi Mmoja heading to the Old Post Office, all other routes will not cross any roads used by the BRT system and motorists as well as pedestrians are reminded to follow the new signs keenly for smooth flow of traffic and to reduce chances of accidents occuring.
