Mwanza. Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL), the publishers of The Citizen, Mwananchi and Mwanaspoti has opened a new chapter in the history of the media history in this country with its decision to print its papers in Mwanza city. This is expected to guarantee quality news on time for thousands of readers in the Lake Zone.
Virtually all national newspapers have been printed in the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, since independence. They are then sent to the Lake Zone by road or air and, in the old days or, back in 1990s, by rail. Given the circumstances, some parts of the Lake Zone have received their newspapers from Dar es Salaam days or even a week later.
Today, though, anew dawn has come to the region following the decision by the country’s leading media house to start publishing its newspapers in Mwanza city on the southern shores of Lake Victoria.
Mwanza Mayor Stanslaus Mabula has recommended the move by Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) to start printing its three top papers in Mwanza. The move will put to rest the concern of the lakeside city and those in the eight Lake Zone regions that they are reading stale news.
MCL’s papers, which lead the pack in the newspaper market, are Mwananchi, MCL’s flagship paper, The Citizen and Mwanaspoti—which is published four times a week.
Flagging off a convoy of five Mwananchi branded vehicles ready to take papers to Kagera, Mara, Shinyanga, Simiyu, Geita and Tabora regions, Mayor Mabula said the move was timely given the presence of advanced information technology and printing technology.
“Failure to access newspapers on time was one of the major obstacles which to a certain extent prevented Mwanza and the entire Lake Zone residents from exploiting various business, employment and educational opportunities available in the papers as they arrived late while news were ready stale,” noted Mr Mabula.
