Queen and Prince Philip visit Game of Thrones film set

- Wednesday, 25 June 2014 No Comments

Live coverage of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to Northern Ireland

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have met cast and production members from Game of Thrones during a tour of the Paint Hall Studios in Belfast.

The US television series is partly filmed in the city’s Titanic Quarter, and is a focal point for Northern Ireland’s burgeoning film industry.

The Royal couple began their second day of engagements at Crumlin Road Gaol in north Belfast.

They are on a three-day visit to Northern Ireland.

As well as meeting cast and production staff, the Royal couple were also given a short overview of the series and the impact it has had on Northern Ireland, not only in terms of employment, but also in the creative arts field.

The Queen and Prince Philip also viewed some of the props that have featured in the hit fantasy show.

It is not just the fact that the Queen has been shown around Crumlin Road Gaol by former inmates, Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness, that makes this yet another symbolic stop.

It is her willingness and determination to visit one of the toughest parts of town, a stone’s throw from Ardoyne, and the Shankill, areas which have had to endure much of the residual violence of the troubles.

In previous years such a tour would have presented a logistical and security headache, but there is now evident confidence on the part of the PSNI.

Crumlin Road Gaol and its underground tunnel through which tens of thousands of republican and loyalist prisoners were marched between the Crown Court and their cells, is a harsh reminder of the conflict.

However, its transformation into one of the most popular visitor attractions in the city, shows that there are now fewer areas out-of-bounds, even to the Queen.

Earlier, they were greeted as they arrived at the Crumlin Road jail by members of the public waving union flags.

Inside, the Royal couple were met by a number of dignitaries, including Northern Ireland’s First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.

The Queen and Prince Philip were accompanied on a tour of C wing by Mr Robinson and Mr McGuinness.

Both politicians were held at the former prison during the Troubles.

Sinn Féin’s Martin McGuinness, a former IRA commander, was held in the prison for more than a month in 1976 on a charge of IRA membership – a charge that was later dropped in court.

Popular attraction

Democratic Unionist Party leader and First Minister Peter Robinson was detained on a number of occasions in the prison during the 1980s for his involvement in protests against the controversial Anglo Irish Agreement.

The jail, which closed in 1996, is now a popular visitor attraction.

The next stop on the Royal couple’s 21st visit to Northern Ireland was St George’s Market, where they experienced a one-off event billed as celebrating the “best of Belfast”.

The market was open to the public.

The Victorian market building underwent a £4.5m refurbishment in 1997 and has become one of the most popular attractions in Belfast.

It houses 170 traders, six shops, a restaurant, and sustains 385 jobs.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh then travelled to the nearby Belfast City Hall for a lunch hosted by the city’s Lord Mayor Nichola Mallon.

The Queen was welcomed to the city hall by Belfast’s Lord Mayor Nicola Mallon

The Queen told guests during the lunch that Northern Ireland had turned the “impossible into the possible”

Guests at the city hall dined on Ulster beef on a bed of Comber potatoes with spinach, mushrooms, a pastry fleuron and a rich Madeira sauce

Representatives of communities and groups across the city were among those attending.

Ms Mallon welcomed the Queen using a mixture of the English and Irish languages.

She told Her Majesty her heart was “bursting with pride” for her city.

The Queen told the assembled guests it was the first time in nearly half a century that she had returned to the “historic and beautiful” venue.

She said much had been learned in that period and said Northern Ireland had turned the “impossible into the possible”.

After leaving city hall the Royal couple made their way to Hillsborough Castle, the Queen’s official residence in Northern Ireland.

The Queen and Prince Philip have been attending a garden party in the castle grounds.

Their visit began on Monday evening in the same venue.

The Queen’s first engagement was separate private meetings with Mr Robinson and Mr McGuinness.

‘Hand of friendship’

It was the third meeting between the Queen and Mr McGuinness but their first one-to-one encounter.

After meeting on Monday evening, Mr McGuinness said it was “about reaching out the hand of friendship to the unionist community”.

Meanwhile, Prince Philip met about 75 recipients of the Duke of Edinburgh gold awards.

It is the Queen’s first visit to Northern Ireland since 2012, when she came as part of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

In the past, details of Royal visits to Northern Ireland have not been announced beforehand for security reasons, but this time around, much of their itinerary has been made public.

TAHLISO president found, alive - RPC

- Monday, 23 June 2014 No Comments
Only hours after university students countrywide threatened to strike following the disappearance of the Chairman for Tanzania Higher Learning Institutions Students Organization (TAHLISO), Musa Mdede, the student has been found alive.

Mdede who is also the President of the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS) - Bugando students was found on Saturday at Usagara in Misungwi district.

Mwanza Regional Police Commander, Valentino Mlowola, said Mdede was found at between 9:00-10:00hours on Saturday alive and taken to Bugando Referral Hospital for check up.

“It’s true that we found the President alive. He was taken to the hospital for check up on the same Saturday and is now in police hands for investigations and his own security,” said the commander.

The commander said the President was found with the help of good Samaritans.
“It is too early to say how he found himself in Usangara. This is why we are still holding him,” noted the commander.

Vice Presidents for students at CUHAS, Benjamini Thomas said: “It is true that Mdede has been found. We were told by doctors at Bungando that he was at the hospital for check up on Saturday and the Regional Police Commander confirmed that. My office will divulge more information once we meet face to face with Mdede,” said Thomas. Mdede was among candidates contesting for TAHILISO presidential post but was abducted by unknown people last week when he returned his application form at the university.

TAHILISO issued a 20-hour deadline until yesterday morning otherwise they would announce a countrywide strike if the police failed to investigate their colleague’s disappearance within the period.

Meanwhile, University of Dodoma (UDOM)’s school of Humanities and Social Sciences are pressing for loans to undertake research and field work. This comes a few days after alleged information that the school had already received funds from Higher Education Students Loans Board for students in the faculty of business and social sciences except those studying languages. The President for UDOM’s school of Humanities and Social Sciences, Masatu Kyabwene said the students were ready to demonstrate if they are denied loans for research and field work.

According to Kyabwene, the number of students required to go for field work in the social science department – second and fourth years is above 1,000 and each is supposed to get at least 620,000/-. He noted that others are 800 students pursuing law in the second and fourth year who are required to get 100,000/- each.

But after getting the information and not being satisfied with the explanation by one loan officer, Kyabwene said he communicated with Prof Msoffe who said the funds will be returned to the Loans Board as they were mistakenly allocated to the school.

The President noted that the move raises more questions as they requested the loan using all the required channels and the school allowed them to secure places for field.

Acting Head for the school, Dr Frowing Nyoni said since it was a Sunday, he did not have enough information and could not get all the required persons to offer the information.

He therefore promised to give the information today after meeting the loan officers, leaders for students and other concerned staff.
Early last week the lecturers at the school were on striken, pressing for their invigilation allowances amounting to 63m/-.

A 60-year-old Nigerian woman just gave birth to a baby girl at a hospital in Lagos.

- Thursday, 19 June 2014 No Comments
here is hope for women who think age is a big barrier to their conception.
After 31 years of childlessness, Mr Omolara Irurhe has finally set her eyes on her own child.

After several attempt to give birth failed, she ended up in the most unlikely hospital and country in 2010 when she started an IVF (Invitro Fertilization treatment) at St Ives Hospital in Lagos.

This past Monday, what began as a seed hope four years ago culminated in the delivery of a bouncing baby girl.

Mrs. Irurhe becomes the oldest IVF mother in Africa. The global recognition for oldest IVF delivery goes to Rajo Deri Lohan, an Indian who in 2008 was delivered of a baby at 69 years.

The IVF Unit at St. Ives Hospital successfully aided the conception and delivery of the baby and has now equaled the United Kingdom’s record of IVF age delivery.

The team of doctors at the hospital was led by the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Tunde Okewale, who expressed joy at the successful delivery. Okewale said the physical condition of the mother – and not just the age – is a major factor that determines the success of conception and delivery through IVF.

“We treat only after strict medical check of couples. For us, age is not important in our decision to take her on; what was important is the physical condition of the mother. Older women generally make better patients in our experience,” Okewale said.

Hear what the excited new mother said;

“I believe we should not limit God and what the doctors can do in this modern age. I believe this is the appointed time. I was very hopeful throughout the years I was childless and I remained focused on God. We went to many hospitals but we didn’t give up,” “We didn’t have much pressure, even though our marriage is cross cultural –I am Yoruba; my husband is Edo- but we remained hopeful,” .

Desmond Adekunle Irurhe was elated at the birth of his baby. When asked if she supported his wife going for the IVF he replied:

“ I supported her throughout because my wife was dogged and she believed in herself. When I saw her faith, I had no choice but to go with her. She kept telling me she would have her child”. “ The hospital didn’t give us any problem, they were very helpful and we thank them for the successful delivery.”

The couple paid less than one million naira for the IVF treatment

“I will advise couples who are trying to get a baby to try the IVF. My case has rekindled hope for the barren woman. I will say the couple should relax and take it as it comes, they will surely smile,”. “ I don’t know if I will have another baby, but if the doctors say I can, I will try it,” she said, smiling.

“I give glory to God, we kept our faith in God, we believe this is God’s appointed time. – the mother said

This is a very good news coming from Nigeria

VIDEO: Lil Wayne accuses Justin Bieber’s Manager Scooter Braun. Trace here

- Monday, 26 May 2014 No Comments

Justin Bieber and Lil’ Twist used to be the best of friends, but the two have seen their fair share of drama over the past year.

In 2013, Twist either moved or was kicked out of Bieber’s Calabasas, California home, after Justin and his boys had a series of run-ins with the law. The Young Money rapper was often painted in the media as a bad influence and now his YMCMB boss, Lil Wayne, is ready to take up for his artist — and he has Beiber’s manager Scooter Braun in his sights.

“I heard this bitchass n—a Scooter talkin’ sh– about my little brother,” Weezy said to the camera, in a new viral video, with his arm around Twist in a show of solidarity.
The video was shot by longtime Young Money director and documenatrian DJ Scoob Doo, and published exclusively on his website Bread Over Bed on Monday (May 26).
“N—a this my motherf—in’ brother, anything you got to say, when you see me say it to my motherf—in’ face,” an irate Wayne continued. “And if you do happen to say it to my motherf—in’ face, I ain’t gonna make you eat them words n—a, I’ma put them bitches on your tombstone.”
At the end of the 56-second clip Tunechi signs off with a vicious: “F— you Scooter!”
In November Twist took to Twitter and blasted Braun, accusing him of putting fake stories in the media that were meant to discredit Twist and make Bieber look “squeaky clean.”
The drama between Twist and Scooter had seemingly died down, but MTV News has learned that the clip was shot last night, as the YM team landed back home from their trip to the Cannes International Film Festival in France. No word, as to which particular Braun comment set Wayne off; he just seems to be sick of it all.
