Chile’s midfielder Jean Beausejour (2nd left) celebrates after scoring his team’s third goal during a Group B football match between Chile and Australia at the Pantanal Arena in Cuiaba during the 2014 Fifa World Cup on June 13, 2014.
In day two of 2014 FIFA World Cup, the team at the bottom of the table is the defending champions, Spain. To make matters worse, Chile beat Australia 3-1 to elevate the possibility of an early group exist for Spain. If Spain get knocked out early, they’d have joined the likes of France,Italy and Brazil who were also defending champions only to find themselves out of tournament quite early.
The game between Chile versus Australia was almost balanced with each team attacking whenever they got a chance. However, Chile looked more organized and has plenty of individual skills among its player something that is important in a tournament such as the World Cup.
Early goals from Barcelona man, Alexis Sanchez (12th minute) and Jorge Valdivia (14th minute) put the South Americans ahead before Tim Cahill’s reply with a brilliant header in the 35th minute of the game. From there on, Australians tried as much as they could to equalize with no chance as Chile defense remained alert to clear anything that came near their territory.
Jean Beausejour scored the 3rd goal for Chile in injury time to seal the victory for Chile a country famous for her fine wines. This result meant Spain has a lot at stake following their humiliating 5-1 defeat by the Dutch.
