Vice President Dr Gharib Bilal is expected to grace the inauguration ceremony of the Uhuru Torch race scheduled to take place on May 2 this year in Bukoba.Talking to reporters over the weekend in Bukoba, Kagera Regional Commissioner Fabian Massawe said the Torch treck will begin in Kagera where it will run for one week before it is handed over to Kigoma regional administration.
As customary, a number of projects will be inaugurated during the course of the Torch run across all districts in the region.
He said in Kagera Region, the Uhuru Torch run will reach its peak in Biharamulo district before Kakonko district authority in Kigoma region takes over.
Massawe commended the government for choosing his region to host the inauguration ceremony of the Uhuru Torch adding that the occasion would promote development of the region and its people.
He thanked contributors of the event which cost a total of 500m/- to fund the various activities related to the Torch run and Massawe called on people and institutions which pledged to contribute to honour their promises.
Uhuru Torch symbolizes freedom and light. It was first lit on top of Mount Kilimanjaro in 1961, symbolically to shine the country and across the borders to bring hope where there is despair, love where there is enmity and respect where there is hatred.
The Uhuru Torch race is staged yearly starting from different prominent places.
