Tabora. Armed gangsters shot dead two police officers during a robbery in Urambo District on Monday.
Tabora Regional Police Commander Susan Kaganda said yesterday the officers were killed after robbers stormed a shop belonging to Mr Ibrahim Mohamed in Usoke and made away with Sh1.2 million.
She said Constable Shaaban Mbua died at the scene, while Constable Jumanne Mrisho succumb at Kitete Regional Hospital.
The two officers had rushed to the area after police were informed that three armed men were robbing a shop.
They bumped into the gangsters as they were fleeing, and the robbers opened fire, killing Mbua on the spot and mortally wounding Mrisho.
Ms Kaganda said police had launched a manhunt for the robbers, who were armed with AK47 assault rifles, and asked local residents to volunteer any information that could lead to their arrest.
“We will find the criminals wherever they are. Law-abiding citizens should help us as we hunt for the killers,” Ms Kaganda said.
She also warned people working in cahoots with armed robbers and other criminals, saying it was just a matter of time before police caught up with them.
Earlier the physician in charge at Kitete Regional Hospital, Dr Deus Kitapondya, described the condition of the officer who had earlier been admitted as “very serious”.
“His condition is critical, and we have advised his relatives and the Police Force to take him to Bugando Hospital in Mwanza,” he said.
