Ten cheat death as ship capsizes in Lake Victoria

Ten people cheated death yesterday afternoon after a cargo ship FB Matara they were travelling in sank in Lake Victoria’s deep waters.

The ship sank between Karebe and Mubilo islands while ferrying 280 tonnes of sugar from the Kagera Sugar Company to Mwanza, the managing Director of Mkombozi Fishing and Marine Transport LTD Kitara Munaka said, narrating the incident.

He attributed the accident to strong tides resulting from equally strong winds, causing the vessel to capsize. Fortunately, the 10 employees who were on board grabbed life boats with which they managed to avoid getting drowned.

The sunken ship remained under water for few hours and resurfaced without the sugar cargo that apparently was destroyed by lake water.

Mwanza Regional Commander Valentino Mlowola confirmed the accident occurred, stating that he has assigned a team to investigate it.
