Dodoma. Deputy minister for Science and Technology January Makamba has called on clerics to pray for a unified Tanzania.
Mr Makamba also asked President Kikwete to remain wise during this period when the country is writing a new constitution and unite Tanzanians, including convincing the members for the Coalition of the Defenders of People’s Constitution to get back to the House when the Constituent Assembly sessions proceed in August.
The deputy minister who doubles as Bumbuli MP made the call recently while inaugurating the Mwendwa Savings and Credit Cooperative (Saccos) for the Anglican Holy Spirit church in the Central Tanganyika dioceses.
During the inauguration ceremony that was presided over by Bishop (rtd) Philip Baji, Mr Makamba contributed Sh3 million towards the Saccos.
He noted that as opinion leaders, clerics bore a significant role in maintaining peace and harmony in the country.
“As spiritual leaders you ought to use your powers to unify Tanzanians. You shouldn’t agree seeing this country being fragmented in the interests of a few individuals,” said Mr Makamba.
He said some issues that emerged during the just-ended Constituent Assembly sessions were shameful, saying that the culprits did not consider the outcomes of their deeds.
Mr Makamba urged members of the Coalition of the Defenders of the People’s Constitution to re-join the second phase Assembly sessions that kicks off in August.
“Personally, I would like to see the new constitution containing provisions that would compel leaders to be transparent and provide an opportunity for citizens to task irresponsible leaders,” said Mr Makamba.
