Over 48m/- has been donated by the government to support special need students at the Stella Maris Mtwara University College (STEMMUCO) in natural gas rich Mtwara.
Speaking to journalists early this week, a senior lecturer of STEMMUCO, who is also the Philosophy and Ethics Department Head, Dr Aidan Msafiri said the money was handed over following a request from the college to the Ministry of Energy and Minerals.
“I have already received 48,420,000/- for financial assistance to the needy students, the money is for tuition and accommodation fees,” detailed the senior lecturer who is also a cleric in the region.
According to the professor, most students at STEMMUCO are from low income families in Lindi and Mtwara regions and most cannot afford to pay tuition fees and accommodation.
“We thank the government very much for this assistance to the needy students, it will ensure they continue and complete their studies successfully,” Dr Msafiri said.
The money will cater for at least 40 students pursuing various certificate and diploma courses at the college.
Addressing the attendants of a a two-day natural resources symposium for religious leaders Prof Msafiri said among other things, the funding will guarantee the regions of a well educated work force that is very much needed if local residents are to have a part in the natural gas sector.
Meanwhile, some of the beneficiaries urged parents to ensure that they too support their children especially with basic necessities and personal effects that will uplift the living standards of the students.
A student in Business Administration, Mchanyambi Mohammedi, expressed gratitude to the government for the donation and called upong the school administration to disburse the funds for the intended purpose.
