Visiting South Africa's Mafikizolo music duo of Nhla Nhla Mciza (L) and Theo Kgosikwe perform during a music concert at Mlimani City in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.
South Africa’s renowned music group, Mafikizolo displayed a remarkable flair of kwaito and stage performance that kept fans on their feet and in constant applause at the Mlimani City auditorium in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.
Delivering a classic performance fit for their new album, Six Mabone, named after the classical car of the 60’s, the group exhibited a stage mastery that was simply, unrivaled.
The duo, Nhlanhla Nciza and Theo Kgosinkwe, rocked the crowded Milimani City hall with hit singles like the top of the charts Khona, Sebenza, Ndihamba Nawe and Emlanjeni all of which had fans singing along and grooving to Kwaito.
Well rounded with afro pop, blues and swing elements, most of the group’s songs are recorded with a live band but for the Saturday performance were backed by talented DJs and delivered an outstanding performance.
The group has a long track record and currently hold South Africa’s best group of the year title as accorded by South Africa Music Awards (SAMA), with hit albums including their first self-titled Mafikizolo, Music Revolution (1999) the best-seller Gate Crashers (2000), Sibongile (2002) which means thank you God in Zulu, made after a fatal 2001 car accident and subsequent death of a group member a few years later.
Surviving the car crash, and in the wake of loosing a founding member, they also recorded and released Kwela (2003), Van Toeka Af (2004), Six Mabone (2008) and last year’s Reunited.
Sponsored by Qway international who transformed the Milimani hall into a state of the art performance arena and served an abundant selection of cognac and aged whiskey, the show, as a commenting member of the organising team put it, ‘lit up the night.’
Mwafikizolo’s performance was also backed by the region’s leading entertainment network, East Africa TV (EATV) along with other key stakeholders of the industry and attracted a score of television popular figures including former Big Brother representatives, Tanzania’s own pop idols and other entertainers.
“The show was amazing…everything I hoped for,” said a fan on the sidelines of the show and in did, the performance is already a buzz on social media and is certainly to remain the talk of the town for quiet sometime.
