Tanzania Breweries Company Limited (TBL) employees have planted over 1,200 trees around Mount Meru University (MMU) in Arusha’s Arumeru district as part of conserving the environment in the region.
The work was done at the weekend, led by Arumeru Acting District Commissioner Stella Kaaya.
Kaaya said environmental protection is a responsibility of each and every individual in the country and that it should not be left to the government alone.
“Trees maintain the environment around us, gives us shades, adds nutrients to the soil, and ensures good harvests in agriculture," she said, adding: "But it also keeps water sources, absorbs carbon dioxide and reduces the harm caused by climate change."
She said human activities related to deforestation have created serious challenges to various stakeholders to protect the environment.
"If we combine our strengths and take action today we can achieve the goal of keeping and protecting our regional environment," TBL Northern Zone Sales and Distribution Devis Deogratis said.
He said he was optimistic that the university management and students would spare time to protect the trees as they grow for the overall good of the environment.
Speaking shortly after the planting exercise, MMU Vice Chancellor, Rev Prof Harrison Olang’ said: “Under the trinity, TBL, Government, and MMU we find the whole concept of 'Public Private Partnership' in action and the fullness thereof.”
Prof Olang' maintained that tree planting activities were of paramount importance in protecting the environment.
"As a religious institution, we will continue to pray for our country’s everlasting peace, unity and solidarity especially as it moves to write a new constitution,” he said.
