Minjeni Women Group (MWG), a Kilimanjaro Women Charity Organization, has donated 11 residential houses to needy families in Uru East and Shimbwe wards in Moshi Rural District.

MWG Secretary, Leah Maukie Romana Olomi, spoke on behalf of the organisation’s executive director during the handover ceremony of one of the houses.

She said the ceremony was a culmination of a survey conducted by Norwegian volunteer, Marion Steigedal who visited the area in September last year.

“When Marion came, she did a survey of family, home, school and health related issues and visited 304 families with poor housing as well as 70 others with worse conditions.

“We started the project for them, and we started first with 11 residential houses that we are handing over to them,” she explained.

Among other issues, the organisation also deals with micro finance projects for the needy and aims at eradicating poverty at the grass roots.

One of the beneficiaries Kireiyo village, Shimbwe ward, Cecilia Massawe said she and her six children, used to live in a small mud house built by a deceased husband.

She said she shared the house with goats, sheep and chicken. “I'm very happy, I thank all of them and their donors, may God bless them..." Steigedal said: "I helped build houses using funds raised from Norway and I will look for more money to build houses for other families.”

Speaking after the handover, Moshi District Community Development Officer (CDO), Pruncen Furaha praised both the organisation and Norwegian volunteer Steigedal for the humanitarian support.

Furaha stated that there are 2,295 needy families in the district whose houses are in bad condition.
